 Mojave Desert

Our Mojave garden project will display plants from various ecological biomes within the winter rainfall desert in southeastern California. The project will occupy about ¾ acre of primarily undeveloped land to the south of our existing desert garden display and north of the Mexican garden.

The garden will have 4 distinct sections for the public to enjoy. The upper portion of the garden will be California Juniper/Pinyon pine woodland, a community that can be found throughout the Mojave Desert. Below the desert woodland will be a rock scree garden, one that you may find on mountain slopes throughout the desert. Plants such as Dedeckera eurekensis, also known as ‘July Gold’ will find home in this interesting rocky terrain. A broad desert wash will come alive with wildflowers in winter and spring and also stay attractive with beautiful desert willows and Psorothamnus spinosus, the desert smoke tree throughout the year. Finally an area of desert shrubland will showcase many of the beautiful shrubs, bulbs and other perennials that grace California’s Mojave Desert.

Our Mojave Desert is a region rich with many beautiful flowering bulbs, shrubs and trees. The Arboretum display will showcase many of these unique and beautiful plants set in a landscape of blond desert sand, golden decomposed granite, large sandstone and granite boulders.

Construction will begin with the initial grading of the planting site. We will then solarize the area for 3-4 months to eliminate weed seeds in the soil. During this process we will acquire the stone and begin constructing the hardscape for the display. While this process is going on, plants being raised in the nursery will be maturing waiting for their introduction into the landscape. The initial construction of this exciting garden will take approximately one year.
