There are many rewarding and interesting volunteer activities available at the Fullerton Arboretum. Our newest volunteer support group is called the Museum Docent Guild. These docents generally greet visitors to the Museum and show them through the exhibit, as well assist them with purchases in our Museum Store. If you are interested in becoming a Museum Docent, contact our Volunteer Coordinator at (657) 278-4798. To learn more about the duties and responsibilities, read more below.

The role of the Museum Docent is to greet and welcome visitors to the Museum, assist visitors with information about the exhibit and make transactions for any purchases made in the museum store.

I. HOURS:

The Museum will be open on Saturday and Sunday, each week, from 12:00 noon until 4 p.m. and for special events or private tours. One (1) docent will be scheduled each day for a 2 hour shift (2 docents per 4 hour shift). It is important that docents arrive on time, and are at the museum when it opens. If you are unable to serve your scheduled shift, please refer to phone list on the reverse side of the schedule and find a substitute. Please notify the other person you are working with that you have made a change to the schedule.

II. DUTIES:

a. Greet and welcome visitors to the museum. There is a "Museum Visitor Recap" sheet located in the museum store. Use a new sheet for each shift. As time allows, jot down the number of visitors during each hour of your shift.

b. Assist visitors with information about the exhibit. While basically "self-guided", visitors may have an occasional question about the exhibit. Remember, that docents are not expected to be "experts"! Refer to the exhibit hand-out for any reference information that may assist the visitor in answering their question.

c. Making sales transactions in the museum store. Visitors may decide to make a purchase from the store inside the museum. Purchases may be made by cash, check or credit card. Sales tax is included in the price, so you do not need to calculate tax. Complete a written receipt using the receipt book and give the top copy to the customer. Record the purchase amount, payment method and items purchased on the "Museum Visitor Recap" form. Credit card transactions are done by completing the credit card information form located in the cash box. It is important to record the title of any book sold, as most of the books are sold by consignment.

III. OPENING/CLOSING:

The museum will be unlocked and open for operation by Arboretum staff. When you are leaving at closing time, a staff member should be present to lock the museum. If you need to reach a staff member, use the radio in the cash box and call for a staff member to come to the museum to lock it for the day. The cash box should be returned to the desk drawer at the close of each day.

IV. SECURITY:

In the event of an emergency or for a security issue, use the following procedure:

a. Use the phone in the museum store, dial "911" or 2515. You will reach the Public Safety Office for the campus. Advise them of the nature of your need, that you are at the arboretum museum and they will respond immediately.

b. Should you need assistance from a staff member on the grounds, use the radio in the cashbox and call for a staff member to come to the museum.
