The Potting Shed will host a butterfly and hummingbird plant sale in 2010during the Green Scene Plant Sale and Garden Show on April 17 & 18. Butterflies are looking for two things when they enter a garden: nectar the food that adult butterflies need to survive, and host plants, the place where the female will lay her eggs and the food that caterpillars need. Both are necessary to create a successful butterfly garden. There will be hundreds of nectar producing perennials and shrubs available which will attract butterflies to your garden to feed. Some favorites that will be available are Salvias, Penstemons, Agastache, Cupheas, Buddlejas and Verbenas plus many more.
A very large number of host plants will be available to encourage butterflies to your yard to lay their eggs. Each type of butterfly will only lay their eggs on a specific type of plant. Some host plants available will be Lavatera, Encelia, Asclepias, Passiflora, and Baccharis. You can find information on which butterflies they will attract and more in The Potting Shed.
