The Fullerton Arboretum will be hosting its annual “June Bloom” Perennial Plant Sale at The Potting Shed, located on the grounds of the Arboretum, June 11 & 12, 2011. For flower and garden enthusiasts, this Perennial Plant Sale promises to offer a huge selection and variety of perennial flowering plants, at the perfect time of the year for planting.
Look for Polemonium caeruleum Stairway to Heaven’ which forms a mound of lacey foliage that is vivid green surrounded by cream colored margins that turn pink in cool weather or sun. The flowers are intense blue and held on spikes that rise above the foliage. Jacob’s Ladder grows 2 feet tall and about 18 inches wide. This variety of Jacob's Ladder is much more tolerant of heat and can take some morning sun.
Don’t miss the Penstemon ‘Firebird’ is an evergreen perennial that grows to 3 feet tall with large trumpet-shaped rich red flowers are 1 ¼ inch long and as broad. The flowers have a red throat that has some pale pink to white at the base. The flowers are held on dark stems that that appear in a succession of flowering peaks from late spring until fall and often appearing year-round in coastal gardens. The flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies into the garden.
And, look for Mimulus 'Dark Pink' (Jelly Beans Dark Pink Monkeyflower) This small shrub grows to 1-2 feet tall with an upright habit. It is moderately vigorous and is freely branching with dark green glossy leaves and numerous large dark rose-pink flowers that have an orange throat and fine white lines along petals. Flowers can be present nearly year-round with peaks in late winter to early summer. Plant in full sun to light shade in a well drained soil.
Also featured are many other colorful and hardy perennials will be available including Achillea, Agastache, Arctotis, Asclepias, Bulbine, Centranthus, Cuphea, Dianthus, Euphorbia, Felicia, Geranium, Justicia, Pelargonium, Penstemon, Ruellia, Salvia, Veronica and more.
Established in 1979, the Fullerton Arboretum has served the community as a premier resource for ecological, horticultural and historical education. There is not a charge for visitors, however to help support the development of the Arboretum gardens and educational programs, voluntary donations at the main entrance are encouraged. The Fullerton Arboretum is the largest botanical garden in Orange County. Encompassing 26 lush acres, The Fullerton Arboretum has assembled a permanent collection of over 4,000 unique and unusual plant species from around the world. With its ponds, streams and wildlife, the Fullerton Arboretum offers a tranquil retreat from a fast-paced urban life.
