The Potting Shed is a unique retail nursery (plant sales) and garden shop facility on the grounds of the Fullerton Arboretum. It is typically open on weekends, Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. year-round with the exception of being closed in August.
Specialty plants sales are held approximately 10 times a year. The plant selection focuses on California natives and Mediterranean plants. Many of the plants seen growing on the Fullerton Arboretum grounds can be purchased in The Potting Shed. A wide range of other plants are available also including vines, salvias, perennials, ground covers, shrubs, herbs, cactus and succulents, bulbs, and seeds.
Proceeds from plant sales plant sales support the Fullerton Arboretum and offer the public a chance to buy rare and unusual plants not available at other nurseries.
The Potting Shed is staffed with dedicated volunteers who assist with cashier responsibilities and plant specialists who are available to answer any questions customers may have about the planting and care of the plants they wish to purchase.
Ornamental herbs and vegetables in season are popular items, particularly the fabulous heirloom tomatoes – typically available at our Monster Tomato and Pepper Sale, held in March each year. So, too, are the unusual perennials and large assortment of Salvias and Buddleias for the hummingbird and butterfly gardens. Exotic vines, tropicals, and succulents are always available. The selection of plants is constantly changing according to the time of year and the appearance of new and exciting species.
Under the direction of Nursery Manager Evie Tyra, Arboretum volunteers propagate and nurture the plants from seeds or cuttings, many from the Arboretum grounds. Volunteers, called ‘The Potters’ are proud of their contribution to this beautiful botanical garden. The Potting Shed recently introduced a new brand for all items sold which is called “Arboretum Medleys”. All potted plants, seeds and bulbs sold will be promoted under this brand name.
The Potting Shed also hosts several specialty plant sales during the year, which are usually tied to a specific plant variety or group. Check our website often for updates on these important sales. If you would like to volunteer in The Potting Shed, please visit our volunteer page for more information.
