The Potting Shed is a retail nursery sales operation on the grounds of the Fullerton Arboretum that sells a large variety of various plants, shrubs and flowers. Our inventory philosophy is twofold in that we try to propagate and sell plants that are in our collection on the grounds which best reflect the beauty and natural appearance of the Arboretum and we try to sell specialty seasonal plants through various special seasonal sales to focus on special opportunities for our members and customers.
On average, we hold over 10 specialty sales a year, in addition to our weekend and midweek regular sales. The normal hours of The Potting Shed are Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Proceeds from these special sales directly benefit the Fullerton Arboretum. Twice a year—in February and in July—The Potting Shed also holds a 2 week Clearance Sale with most plants up to 50% off. Also, in November, we host an “Evening in The Potting Shed”special evening sale for pre-holiday purchases and to support membership development.
Many specialty sales are held in partnership with local plant clubs and societies, such as the annual Cactus and Succulent Sale in December each year, which is a partnership between the Arboretum and the Orange County Cactus and Succulent Society. Others include a Bonsai Show, African Violet Show and Sale, and Herb Extravaganza—and the list is growing each year.
The philosophy of promoting special sales at The Potting Shed has helped to differentiate the Fullerton Arboretum from other similar like institutions, as some of these sales have grown beyond local and even regional recognition—such as the annual Monster Tomato and Pepper Sale—perhaps the largest of its kind in California.
In addition to the major regularly scheduled special sales, others are continually being introduced and evaluated to see if they benefit our members and customers. This year (2008) we are adding a Butterfly and Hummingbird Plant Sale at the annual Green Scene Plant Sale and Garden Show on April 19 & 20, the Tri-County African Violet Show and Sale on February 23 & 24, a special sale featuring the Aristolochia “Fullerton Arboretum” on April 5 & 6 (a hybrid developed at the Fullerton Arboretum) and even a second Cactus and Succulent Sale on July 26 & 27.
